Hippie Boy: A Girl’s Story

What would you do if your Mormon stepfather pinned you down and tried to cast Satan out of you? For thirteen-year-old Ingrid, the answer is simple: RUN.  For years Ingrid has begged her free-wheeling dad to let her join him on the road as a tool-selling vagabond to escape the suffocating poverty and religion at home. When her devout Mormon mother marries Earl―a homeless Vietnam vet who exploits the religion’s male-dominated culture to oppress and abuse her family―she finally gets her wish. Ingrid spends the next few summers living on the margins while hustling tools with her dad and his slimy, revolving sales crew. He becomes her lifeline and escape from Earl. But when her dad is arrested, she learns the lesson that will change her life: she can’t look to others to save her; she has to save herself.

Ingrid Ricks is a Ballard-based writer and speaker who focuses on overcoming adversity and embracing life. Her stories and essays have been published in Salon, Ladies’ Home Journal, The Seattle Times and a variety of other publications.

The Scottish Buddhist Cookbook

is an exercise in manic depression, crock pot recipes, divorce, a stuffed Jesus doll, casual fornication, over-drinking, and a small amount of Scottish Buddhist propaganda.  It is most appreciated by men who have lived unnecessarily complicated lives, and want nothing more than to find a bit of humor and good eats in this pathetically doomed existence.

Jay Craig, who's more fun than the Dalai Lama and not nearly as creepy as the pope, lives on a boat in Ballard with his dog, Kenny. Because he cares so deeply for humanity, he founded Scottish Buddhism and continues to give and give and give. His next book, the Second Book of Mormon, is forthcoming.
