An intelligent book by a creative, amazing story teller. It's a hard-to-put-down adventure/survival tale with magical and spiritual undertones. A thought-provoking book that considers what is real and what is perceived. Join 16 year old Pi on his journey from India to Canada on a lifeboat after an accident at Sea, with ultimately only a tiger as his companion. Winner of the Booker Prize. Ages 12 and up.

When English orphan, Maia, travels in 1901 to the Amazon jungle in Brazil to begin a life with distant relatives, she is filled with anticipation. The Amazon is as fascinating as she'd hoped, but her relatives turn out to be snobby, mean and deceitful. This book would have been exactly my type of book as a young reader - historical fiction with mystery, adventure, interesting characters and a strong heroine, and I thouroughly enjoyed it as an adult as well. Ages 8 and up.

With its beautiful collages, simple text and Haiku, this book offers exposure to Eastern philosophy, is absolutely stunning. The art, by Caldecott award winning artist Ed Young, is a feast for the eyes. Wabi Sabi, a concept in Japanese culture that describes beauty through simplicity, is the name of a cat in Kyoto. He sets off on a journey to find the meaning of his name. Especially good for kids old enough to appreciate and understand, but also a beautiful opportunity to explore and discuss.

Have you read anything by this fantastic Australian author yet? This is a gem - a powerful saga of several generations of two completely different working-class families who come to live in the same large home and whose lives become intertwined. Well worth the adjustment to Australian slang. Great book club choice, too!

I had heard about, but not read Old Filth when I picked up this more recently released campanion novel. This book focuses on Betty's life (wife of Filth, a British Barrister living in Hong Kong) and wonderfully dovetails with the first book - filling in all the blanks! Read in either order!

I always look forward to a new Tim Winton book, he's one of my favorite authors. His latest is a coming of age story, a story of risk-taking beyond normal limits, and a breath-taking (excuse the pun) work that is built around water and big wave surfing.
