How many times do we come of age in one lifetime?

I can't think of a book I've enjoyed more - its original edition has a prime spot on my bookshelf and is well thumbed. What a treat to have this new edition, with an extra 9 years of letters.

No need for a plane ticket - head for an armchair and fasten your seatbelt. This one has a very tantalizing ending.

A sweeping historical novel, describing the slow and suspicious opening of Japan to Westerners, from a very unexpected point of view. Exceptionally interesting to anyone interested in languages.

A marvelous and quietly comic (as well as serious) novel about culture clash with Japan. A whole cast of eccentric international characters. I loved it.

Quite an unusual memoir. And hard to characterize. Of both Rome and his new twin boys, he's in awe, but never sappy. Rome - and parenthood - are both grand and ordinary all at once. He captures this beautifully.

The even, plain-spoken prose of this collection turns evocative and haunting upon reflection. Tales of almost-mystical connection, looking back to a time that was, indeed, haunting.
